Government ‘Dismisses’ & Rejects EU Trade Terms

The British government has strongly rejected the European Union’s trade negotiation demands, according to a report by Sky News Chief political correspondent, Jon Craig.

Boris Johnson has publically stated how he would like to strike a trade deal with the European Union before the end of the year. During the general election, Mr Johnson outlined how his government would attempt to secure an agreement with the European Union based on the Canadian model.

The Prime Minister is adamant that there is no need for the UK to align to EU rules and regulations. The UK left the EU on the 31st of January.

According to Sky News, the government has “dismissed” EU trading demand and claimed that the bloc “is being tougher on the UK over trade than it has been on other countries.”

Demands made by Brussels ahead of Brexit trade talks are unreasonable and ridiculous, a government source is claiming as the UK prepares to start negotiations.

The European Union is looking to impose rules on the UK tax regime and make the British government align with its rules and standards forever. The bloc is also demanding the UK abides by EU state aid procedures and the polices UK subsidies.

The government has since pointed out that the EU has trade deals with countries such as Japan and Canada which do not include such a requirement.

Around 40 people are set to head up trade talks with the European Union, led by the chief negotiator, David Frost.

If the UK does not reach an agreement with the European Union by the end of the year, the two parties will revert to trading on WTO terms. The British government is preparing for such a scenario and mitigating risks. A close friend of Boris Johnson, Michael Gove is in charge of overseeing no-deal preparations.

It’s believed that the European Union would like to maintain access to UK fishing waters once the transition period ends, despite the UK no longer being a member of the Common Fisheries Policy.

Boris Johnson has stated on a number of occasions that the UK will become an independent coastal fishing state and any deal struck with the EU will put British fishermen first.

The aim is to rebuild the UK’s fishing fleet.
